Those
who began the Reformation movement never thought that they were beginning
a "new" faith. They believed that their ideas reflected the
original faith of Jesus' disciples, and were the true continuation of
the church's heritage. So today we pray that we are constantly
seeking the true essence of what it means to become children of God
through the grace of Christ, as this is revealed to us through
God's word, the Bible.
The
Bible is at the center of our faith and worship. We experience
it as a book so rich and beautiful that we can never exhaust its meaning
or its message for us. Through sermons and study we find ourselves engaged
in conversation with God himself. In a miraculous way, God reveals who
God is through these words and stories written down long ago.
We believe
that God is uniquely manifest in the person Jesus Christ.
While great spiritual wisdom is to be found in many religious paths,
our personal experience is that Christ shows us God in ways which not
only comfort us, but surprise and challenge us. As long as we do not
let our own prejudices and motives obscure our sight, we have in Jesus
a perfect window into who God is.
This
same God works in our lives through the Holy Spirit,
to draw us to him, enlighten our understanding of spiritual things,
and guide us in our daily living. We are shown not just how to live,
but who we may become: when we live as God's people, our moral decisions
become clear and simple.
Along
with the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament, we are part of a tradition
with historic statements of faith which help to guide us in interpreting
the Bible. The most familiar is the Apostles' Creed. But above all we
hold to God's Word, as it speaks uniquely to every place and time, and
to each woman and man wherever they may stand on their spiritual journey.
This
is why you will feel welcome here, whether you were born and
raised Reformed, or are someone with no religious background but is
seeking spiritual truth wherever it may be found. There is a place here
even for those who claim to believe nothing, for after all, we are all
simply on this mysterious road of life together, hoping to find our
way.
